Polish fishermen received the MSC for sprat fishery with pelagic trawls

The Polish sprat fishery has achieved certification to the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) globally recognised standard for sustainable fishing. It’s the first MSC certification for sprat fishery in Poland. This is the second, after flatfish, certificate received by the Polish fisheries this year.

The Polish sprat fisheries certified to the MSC includes four fisheries organisations: Kołobrzeska Fish Producers Group (KGPR), Fish Producers Organisation Władysławowo (OPRW), National Chamber of Fish Producers (KIPR) and Fish producer Organisation Bałtyk (OPR Bałtyk).

The certificate received on 13th October 2021 refers to sprat (Sprattus sprattus), caught with pelagic trawls and includes 52 fishing vessels fishing in ICES sub-divisions 22-29.

The assessment to the MSC Fisheries Standard was conducted by independent auditors from Global Trust. The transparent assessment process examined the fishery’s impact on the marine ecosystem as well as the effectiveness of its management in ensuring that the environment is protected for the future.

Sprat is a small pelagic fish, They grow up to 10-14 cm. They are found in the entire Baltic. Sprat is caught for human consumption and for fish oil. The consumption of sprat in Poland amounted to approx. 1 kg per year. Polish fishermen catch the biggest amount of sprat of all Baltic countries. The landings of sprat in 2020 were above 60.000 tonnes.
