Preliminary report from the research expedition on Franken shipwreck

We have the report of the preliminary research expedition carried out on Franken shipwreck on 23rd – 28th April 2018. The expedition was part of the project Reduction of the negative impact of oil spills from the Franken shipwreck carried out by the MARE Foundation in cooperation with the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk, using the research vessel of the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk and a vessel from divers centre.

The main goal of the expedition was to determine the state of the tanker, estimate the amount of fuel in the tanks and to collect data needed for further actions, including research. On the basis of the results of this expedition, a preliminary action plan for oil retrieval from the Franken ship wreck was elaborated under the supervision of Dr. Benedykt Hac from the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk. The amount of fuel inside the tanker was estimated at approx. 1.5 million litres. Considering that there are 5-6 tanks to clean inside the wreck, and another 3-4 to be examined (the most difficult ones to access),  the cost of this operation was estimated at approx. 20 million EUR.
